DISCRETION is a better part of valor, or should we say self-restraint is a better part of valor.
This is just a piece of unsolicited advice to our fellow media practitioners from the Unang Alyansa ng Pambansa at Pamprobinsiyang Lupon at Ugnayan ng Makatao at Maka-Diyos na mga Mamamahayag or 1st-APLUMA, which I head as national president
1st APLUMA is an aggrupation of provincial editors, writers, columnists and radio announcers and a select council of advisers from major national news organization.
Our group made this call after the senseless murder of a radio broadcaster/newspaper columnist in Tabuk, Kalinga, the first reported media killing in the days-old Aquino administration.
The 75-year-old victim, Jose Daguio, was having dinner when an unidentified gunman armed with a 12-gauge shotgun barged into his house and fired several rounds to the helpless journalist.
Daguio, a reporter-commentator of Radyo Natin Tabuk and a part-time columnist of a community newspaper, was rushed to Kalinga Provincial Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Media practitioners, in the real sense, should be responsible in delivering the facts to the public, especially now that some public figures are resorting to violent means to get even or to exact revenge.
Press freedom is not absolute so we should get our facts straight, be objective and not use our jobs for personal reasons.
Also, 1st-APLUMA Secretary General Fitzgerald Cecilio reported that personally witnessed how a radio commentator lambasted a local official in Zambales even without hard facts.
This should not be the case. We should not put ourselves in harm’s way by delving on issues without hard evidence or facts.
Our group is also asking authorities to consider the re-implementation of a nationwide gun ban, which was lifted last June 9 after the lapse of the election period.
After the gun ban was lifted, there was a spate of violence against journalists who were just performing their duties.
I am referring to the killing of three journalists, including Agustin, during a five-day period after the lifting of the election-related gun ban on June 9.
Radio commentator Jovelito Agustin, who worked for the dzJC-Aksyon Radio, was shot in Barangay Barit on the night of June 15 while he was on his way home to nearby Bacarra. He died in a hospital at about 1 a.m. on June 16.
Nestor Bedolido was murdered in Digos City in Davao del Sur on June 19 and broadcaster Jesiderio “Jessie” Camangyan was killed in Manay, Davao Oriental, on June 14.
