2010

1. PRESIDENT AQUINO'S 100- DAYS IN OFFICE (Oct. 7, 2010)

During his speech at the La Consolacion College in Manila, President Aquino has cited the following as the biggest accomplishments of his 100-day old government.

-- A stronger economy with a stronger peso.

-- Gross International Reserves at all-time high of $52.3 billion on September 20.

-- The Philippine Stock Exchange Index surpassed the 4,000-mark, hitting the all-time high mark at 4,196.73 points.

-- The overnment saved taxpayers' money by suspending the excessive benefits and allowances of the executives of government owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs) and cancelling some of the negotiated contracts of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

-- The saving from these moves, went to education, health, and social welfare.

-- Boasted of the $434 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) granted to the Philippines by the US government, noting that the previous Arroyo administration applied for the grant twice but failed to obtain it.

--- $2.4 billion investments from foreign investors that would create 43,600 jobs for Filipinos.

-- Boasts of a more effective weather forecasting system.

-- A honest government that is ready to listen to the people.

MEMORANDUM CIRCULAR NO. 1 RECALL (JULY 1, 2010)

-- Talk about starting a six-year term on the wrong foot. The first order that came out of Malacanang Palace created a loud bang but ended with a whimper after it was recalled for fine-tuning as it would greatly affect the function of the bureaucracy.

BRO. ARMIN LUISTRO'S BOO-BOO (JULY 5, 2010

-- What a way for Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro to start his government service. On his first day at work, Luistro blasted the media for creating a big issue out of the planned sex education program for elementary students. Luistro’s move prompted the Palace to arrange media seminar for its Cabinet members so as not to strain the government’s relation with the press.

MANILA HOSTAGE CRISIS (AUG. 23, 2010)

-- The hostage taking of more than 20 tourists from Hong Kong by a disgruntled policeman was a major acid test for his administration where he could show the world what stuff he's made of as a leader.

-- But instead of highlighting his capacity to lead the country in the international spotlight, Noynoy failed miserably due to his lack of leadership, especially during the critical times of the hostage drama where he was seen at a restaurant along Roxas Blvd. instead of calling the shots at the Quirino Grandstand.

-- The country also took a major hit in the international stage, with tourists from Hong Kong and other countries cancelling their visit to the Philippines.

-- Feeling the pressure from the Chinese government, he ordered the creation of the Incident Investigation and Review Committee (IIRC) to look into the matter and determine those responsible for the fiasco.

FIRST FOREIGN VISIT (UNITED STATES FROM SEPT. 20 TO 27)

-- President Aquino had been given a chance to redeem himself from the negative effects of the Manila hostage drama during his first foreign visit as President of the Philippines to the UN General Assembly in New York.

-- Bringing with him a lean but mean delegation, Aquino grabbed a share of the limelight with his call of global people power against poverty to UN members.

-- While in the US, President Aquino made several meetings with businessmen and international companies to entice them to invest in the Philippines.

-- Calling his trip a successful one, the Chief Executive brought home $2.7 billion worth of investment pledges that would translate to more than 43,000 new jobs in the next three years for Filipinos.
