THE 16-man rescue team of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will arrive tomorrow morning after a successful mercy mission in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.
Chairman Francis Tolentino ordered the deployment of the MMDA contingent on Saturday as a response to the request for assistance of Congressman Randolph Ting and the city government to help in the rescue and relief operations in the area.
“In addition to manpower, we also sent three rubber boats and outboard motors to Tuguegarao to help in the evacuation of thousands of residents from thirty nine barangays submerged in water due to continuous rainfall in the area,” Tolentino said.
The team, comprised mostly of personnel from the agency’s Rescue Unit and Public Safety Office, helped the local government units in transporting affected residents to several evacuation centers in the province.
At present, the team is placed on standby on critical points in Tuguegarao to respond to the reported possible damming of the Chico River.
“This just goes to show that the MMDA is always ready to help and extend its services to everyone in need, even beyond Metro Manila,” Tolentino said.
In recent years, the MMDA has also sent agency personnel to Kalibo, Aklan and Alaminos, Pangasinan to assist local government units in rescue, relief, clearing, and cleanup operations after they were severely damaged by super typhoons.
