Senator Loren Legarda has urged the Philippine government as a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to continue to push for the restoration of democracy in military-ruled Myanmar, especially now that democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi has been released from detention. Legarda met with Suu Kyi several days after her release as chair of the Senate committee on foreign relations. (Philstar)
On privatization
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is considering moving out to a new home in Clark Field in Pampanga or Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija if its present headquarters at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City is privatized. AFP spokesman Brig. Gen. Jose Mabanta yesterday revealed the relocation plan is the first option being considered by the top brass in line with the planned privatization of government properties. “We are open to relocation and are now looking at Clark or at Fort Magsaysay,” Mabanta said. On Cabinet revamp
A Cabinet secretary is reportedly already getting clearance from his department following President Aquino’s announcement that there will be a minor revamp in his official family, sources said yesterday. The President and Malacañang officials declined to comment on the information, which would indicate that the secretary was preparing to leave his office. The sources said it was the first time for the secretary to have his clearance prepared.(Philstar)
On new appointments
President Aquino has named Senior Superintendent Gilberto Marpuri as chief of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology while former Philippine Overseas Employment administrator Jennifer Manalili was appointed commissioner of the Professional Regulations Commission. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte announced the appointments on government-run radio station . Also appointed were broadcaster Thelma Dumpit Murillo as Director 4 of the Department of Trade and Industry, and lawyer Michelle Angela Go as acting assistant secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Lawmakers appealed yesterday to President Aquino to suspend the looming simultaneous hikes of transportation fares and toll fees and called for a review of privatization and build-operate-transfer (BOT) laws to protect Filipino consumers. Police in Metro Manila have thrown a wide security blanket across the Quirino Grandstand and the roads leading to and from the Quiapo Church where millions are expected to converge for the mammoth – and sometimes rowdy – procession of the Black Nazarene today. Some 3,500 police officers from the Manila Police District and the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) will be deployed today in Quiapo to provide security to some six million devotees. The military approved yesterday the conditional release of detained Magdalo leader Marine Capt. Nicanor Faeldon. Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Ricardo David said his order to release Faeldon from detention at Fort Bonifacio was based on the recommendation of the Office of the Judge Advocate General. David said Faeldon would be placed under the custody of Western Command (Westcom) chief Marine Lt. Gen. Juancho Sabban. (Philstar)

Malacañang maintained yesterday there should be no preconditions for talks with the National Democratic Front-Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (NDF-CPP-NPA).
