On Congress
After going their separate ways before the May elections, the so-called Wednesday Group at the Senate reunited during a Christmas party for the media. At the party held at the Senate offices in Pasay City last Friday night, former Vice President Noli de Castro and Senators Manuel Villar, Ralph Recto, Francis Pangilinan and Joker Arroyo huddled in one table. It was the first time that the five came together after going their respective ways because of political differences months before the May elections. In his Christmas message, his first public statement since conceding defeat to President Aquino in the May elections, Villar thanked everybody who helped him and “even those who did not help” him in his bid for the presidency. On Morong 43
President Aquino thumbed down yesterday calls for the military to apologize to the 43 militant health workers for their arrest in February, saying doing so “would be a bit too much already.” “I think we have already rectified the situation,” Aquino told reporters in an ambush interview after leading the first Barangay Assembly Day in Barangay Central here. He also said the government would provide the necessary legal assistance to the arresting officers “who believed or assumed that they were performing their functions.” (Philstar)
On family planning
Life begins at fertilization. Having agreed to this principle with the Catholic church, the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) has asked the Department of Health (DOH) for an inventory of contraceptives used in its family planning program on fears that some may contain abortifacients. (Philstar)
On holidays
President Aquino announced yesterday that Dec. 24 and Dec. 31 would be special non-working days based on Proclamation No. 1841. “That is already stated in the law,” the President said in an ambush interview after the Barangay Assembly Day in Barangay Central here. Under the same proclamation, Christmas Day is a regular holiday. Dec. 24 and 31 fall on Friday while Christmas Day is a Saturday. (Philstar)
On top cops
The outstanding policemen whose awarding of medals was put on hold by the Rizal Park hostage crisis finally got their medals and trophies from President Aquino last Thursday, almost four months after the Aug. 23 controversy broke out. The recipients included eight policemen and two policewomen, composed of four commissioned and six non-commissioned officers from the Philippine National Police (PNP), who have distinguished themselves in community service.(Philstar)
On Corona impeachment
Impeaching Chief Justice Renato Corona is not a priority of the administration even after the Supreme Court
declared Executive Order No. 1 creating the Truth Commission as unconstitutional, President Aquino declared here yesterday. Aquino also dared critics to face him over accusations of being inaccurate after revealing that some members of the House of Representatives wanted to impeach an SC justice.(Philstar)
On legal team
Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago said the setbacks in the courts suffered by Malacañang in its first few months in office proves that its legal team is weak and needs help. Reacting to the ruling of the Supreme Court that President Aquino’s Executive Order No. 1 creating the Truth Commission was unconstitutional, Santiago said the Palace legal team “is inadequate in legal education.” The senator did not blame Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. for the legal setbacks since it is not his job to ensure the directives and issuances of the President are legally sound.(Philstar)
On HIV
The multi-sector Philippine National AIDS Council (PNAC) is expecting the number of HIV/AIDS cases in the country to reach 46,000 by 2015 if no effective intervention measures will be implemented soon. PNAC Secretariat executive director Dr. Ferchito Avelino said at present, there are five new HIV cases every day.(Philstar)
