AN umbrella of media and labor organizations has called on the public to exercise their right of suffrage under the 1987 Constitution by going out and voting for the next Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan leaders on Monday, Oct. 25.
“Do not let your right to choose the next leaders go to waste. Let’s go out and exercise that right,” Unang Alyansang Pag-asa ng Lahi at Uring Mamamahayag-Manggagawa (1st-APLUMA) National President Ismael Amigo said.
In the exercise of our right to vote, Amigo also asked voters to choose candidates who are God-fearing, honest and pro-people.
“These traits are very important in our quest to achieve the good government we are longing for,” Amigo emphasized.
As the smallest political unit in the country and breeding ground for future leaders, Amigo pointed out that right people with the right knowledge and values should be chosen to run the more than 42,000 barangays in the country.
1st-APLUMA is an organization representing provincial correspondents and the labor sector, comprising of food servers, waiters, nurses and other hospital workers and ordinary laborers.
Candidates are vying for 42,025 and 294,175 seats for barangay chairmen and barangay kagawads (councilors) and 42,025 for SK chairmen and 294,175 slots for SK kagawads.
Registered voters for the barangay election have reached 52.7 million and 2.4 million for the SK polls.
Amigo also called on the public to support and pray for the officials and personnel of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the teachers who will act as board of election tellers so as to ease the burden they will be facing.
“The Comelec and the teachers need the support and prayer of the public because they are facing a gargantuan task of ensuring that everyone’s right to vote will be protected,” Amigo added.
